Beautiful Black Being
(2016)
'Beautiful Black Being' depicts a young girl with splotches of various shades of the color brown. In the image we see the word's coffee, caramel, cocoa, chocolate, almond, and brown all outshined by the large word Beautiful. In the background a poem is written with parts stating "beneath the cerebral my black is beautiful, my black is powerful, my black is more exquisite than a pink diamond". This piece represents the beauty of all shades of brown. A common complex among the black community is that the lighter the shade the more beautiful. Here I wanted to let the black community know that each shade, whether light or dark, all are beautiful and exquisite. I used a young child because this complex usually can be seen from such a young age. In my eyes starting to teach the idea that all are beautiful from the beginning of childhood is how this issue can be resolved.
